EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Contracted Logistics Maintenance personnel from Lockheed Martin at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., stop the pilot on the taxiway during the return of his flight in preparation to verify the F-35A’s brake temperatures are within safe limits to recover the aircraft March 13. An electronic hand-held device takes an immediate temperature reading. This procedure is what is commonly dubbed by crew chiefs and pilots as the “hot brake check.” The Air Force variant of the joint strike fighter is piloted by Marine Corps Maj. Joseph Bachmann, and this cross-service cooperation is a hallmark of the Joint Strike Fighter Integrated Training Center located at the 33rd Fighter Wing at Eglin AFB. (U.S. Air Force photo/Maj. EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Staff Sgt. Andrew Fries, 33rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief, Eglin Air Force Base Fla., reviews tasks in the Autonomic Logistics Information System to perform the post-flight inspection after an F-35A Lightning II sortie March 13. The F-35 completed about an hour and a half orientation and was the second sortie to date. Although the first F-35 launch March 7 was successful, it was cut short after 20 minutes because of a fluid leak. The F-35 Integrated Training Center at Eglin AFB has an initial goal of two sorties a week, and plans to steadily increase. (U.S. Air Force photo/Maj. Karen Roganov)
