Build an integrated AETC survey Published April 29, 2010 By AETC Strategy Oversight Branch RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- By now, select Randolph Air Force Base Airmen have been asked to participate in the headquarters' survey "Build an Integrated AETC Team." This command strategic objective focuses on working together effectively by maximizing communication and collaboration efforts. Highlighted objectives include: Continually work on becoming one command with one focus, "Develop America's Airmen Today ... for Tomorrow. Everyone needs to understand their role in contributing to the mission of this Command. We must build an integrated AETC team that maximizes communication and collaboration efforts to effectively and efficiently perform its mission. Since last fall, surveys have been sent out to 6,000 AETC personnel, randomly once a quarter. Early feedback indicated concerns that the surveys were not truly anonymous. To ease these concerns and automate the collection process, the survey has been moved to an AF Knowledge Now Community of Practice Web site. Members taking the survey will not need an account or password to access the Web site. While using the CoP does require a common access card access for security reasons, survey responses remain anonymous. Survey data is analyzed and used to develop initiatives or action plans to address negative trends. This information is then presented to the Air Education and Training Command commander in the quarterly strategy review briefings. The presentation is broken out into the two categories identified for this objective, communication and collaboration. The first strategic measure focuses on AETC personnel's satisfaction with communication. Of the six surveys thus far, 71.2 percent of the respondents felt "I have timely access to knowledge when and where I need it." While this is close to AETC's target of 80 percent, comments collected highlight areas where effort needs to be applied. Collaboration or knowledge sharing is the command's second measure. So far, only 51.4 percent felt "AETC personnel collaborate effectively," well below the established 80 percent target. Comments collected mentioned elements such as time constraints limiting collaboration efforts. Also, respondents felt there was ineffective communication down the chain. Initiatives worked thus far include developing collaboration tools and implementing SharePoint across the command demonstrating the power of Airmen's survey inputs. Better collaboration tools should enhance personnel networking capabilities. As for SharePoint, bases are already using it to manage performance report and administrative processing and will continue to discover the other capabilities the software offers. So, if you are selected as a survey recipient in the future, please take the time to complete it. Your inputs definitely make a difference in executing this strategic objective.
