LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas – Defenders do more than scan Identification Cards at the front gate. Many have deployed overseas and have been in combat situations. For this very reason, Defenders work and train extensive hours to stay sharp at all times.

Every year on Jan. 9, the nation takes a day to celebrate and honor the service of all law enforcement agencies around the country and abroad as Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. This includes military law enforcement’s public service to ensure members of Laughlin work and live in a safe, threat-free environment.

The 47th Security Forces Squadron provide force protection and law enforcement services for all personnel working or residing on Laughlin.

“I patrol the base roads enforcing traffic policies and act as a deterrent to any incidents or accidents that happen on the instillation,” said Senior Airman Christopher Shelton, a 47th SFS patrolman. “My favorite thing about this job is the camaraderie you make. I’ve met some of my best friends here.”

“Law enforcement is a very difficult career field,” said Senior Airman Karen Reyes, 47th SFS assistant NCO in charge of armory operations. “You see and do things that not everyone can handle. Knowing what you’re doing can save and help people, which makes it all worth it.”

Regardless of holidays, time or weather conditions, Team XL Defenders are always prepared for the unpredictable and have the tools to deter adversaries.

“Knowing we have Defenders keeping watch, regardless of the time, makes me feel incredibly safe,” said Ashley Phan, 47th Force Support Squadron frame shop manager. “Their hard work never goes unnoticed and we’re here to support them in anything they might need.”
