Air Education and Training Command officials recently announced the 2008 Federal Asian/Pacific American Council Military Meritorious Service Award:

The command selected Senior Airman Sophal Duong, 82nd Training Wing, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. This award annually recognizes service members who have distinguished themselves in the war on terrorism, whose activities best support the ideas of duty, honor, and country or who best epitomize the core values and the citizen-warrior attributes of their respective military service.

This award also considers the significant contributions to the advancement of Asian Pacific Americans and the promotion of diversity/equal employment opportunity in the federal work force and the APA community.

Her absolute dedication to the advancement of APA and the promotion of diversity/equal employment opportunity in the federal work force and the APA community were significant factors in the accomplishments of the Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Committee's events at Sheppard AFB.

To guarantee APIHC's continued success, she was instrumental in planning and organizing fund raisers for future events. As Vice President APIHC, her dedicated efforts were a direct result of membership in the APIHC increasing by an amazing 500 percent.

Based on her wealth of knowledge and experience with the APIHC, Airman Duong was hand-selected to fill a critical position as a Country Liaison in the International Military Student Office, maintaining daily contact with senior ranking military personnel from around the world.

Airman Duong's coordination with on-base organizations to promote ethnic and cultural consciousness across the base, her extensive community involvement and countless hours of selfless efforts distinguished herself as an exceptional leader and role model for the Air Force.

Airman Duong will now compete at the Air Force level competition.
