FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- Air Force Lt. Col. Brett Sharp administers a saline lock, more commonly known as an IV, to Army Capt. (P) Mike Hahn during Combat Lifesaver training Dec. 16 while under the expert supervision of an Army combat medic. Colonel Sharp, an Air Battle Manager, deployed from Air Combat Command headquarters at Langley AFB, Va., to command the Paktia PRT. Captain Hahn is an OH-58D Kiowa helicopter pilot deployed from Fort Rucker, Ala., and he will serve as the team’s operations officer. Current combat zone medical protocol calls for administering a saline lock to combat casualties because it’s easier to accomplish while veins are still viable rather than later when time might be short and the veins collapsed from blood loss.
