Members from all over the country came to pay respect and recognize 10 individuals who have passed away and been added to the Firefighter Memorial ceremony held at the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy High Bay on Goodfellow May 3.

“Today we had the Firefighter Heritage Memorial, where we honor all of the firefighters who have served in the DOD,” said Tech. Sgt. Alexander Spears, 312th Training Squadron instructor. “These people served their country and we come out here to honor and memorialize these firefighters and have their families out here to join us.”

Shane Hennessey was one of the 10 who were honored during the service. The family of Hennessey were brought out to be a part of the memorial service this year. Along with the family attending the ceremony, members from Air Force Reserve Command were also in attendance recognizing the sacrifices made.

“As a civilian and reservist, I am a firefighter,” said Tech. Sgt. Joe Hillstrom, 934th Fire Department assistant chief of operations. “It is part of the heritage. It is honoring all of the individuals in the career field.”

The memorial recognizes all of the firefighters who serve within the DOD. There are currently over 100 names on the memorial.

“We are grateful that we can show them that we care about that history,” said Spears.
