During the 2020 E-8 selection cycle, there were only 1,184 individuals selected out of 15,544. This makes the selection rate for senior master sgt. only 7.62 percent this year. Goodfellow celebrated with individuals who made the cut on March 3.

Throughout an individual’s career they go through the different tiers of rank, learning to transition from being a learner and follower to becoming leaders and helping shape the next generation of Airmen who come up through the ranks. Senior master sergeants are senior enlisted leaders, and, must reflect the highest qualities of a leader and professional. They have operated at the tactical level of their jobs, and now they must operate at the operational competence, or strategic vision level, of leadership.

They take what they have learned to develop their leadership and management skills in preparation for expanded responsibilities and higher leadership positions. They help mentor and lead the enlisted Airmen below them, and the officers who look to them for advice and mentorship.

Congratulations to Senior Master Sgt. select John Brahm, 17th Communications Squadron flight chief, and to Senior Master Sgt. select Melissa Grino, 17th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron dental flight chief, for being a part of the few selected to become the next senior master sergeants in the Air Force!
