Columbus AFB hosts Wings Over Columbus virtual air show on social media Published April 27, 2020 By Senior Airman Keith Holcomb 14th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. – Columbus Air Force Base featured a virtual air show, 2020 Wings Over Columbus, on their Facebook page @ColumbusAFB April 24. This virtual air show replaced the physical air show scheduled for April 25-26 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the virtual air show Columbus AFB connected with their community and allowed the public to see the world’s greatest military aviators from a different perspective. “The purpose of this virtual air show is to showcase airpower to you and highlight the dedicated selfless service of our military members all across the globe,” said Col. Samantha Week, 14th Flying Training Wing commander. “The men and women of Columbus Air Force Base work every day to be the premier pilot training wing alongside our community, to create the world’s most advanced generation of pilots, and cultivate all Airmen to be bold innovative leaders ready to fly, fight and win.” In a series of 16 videos, the 14th Flying Training Wing showcased various civilian and military aerial demonstrations and acts, along with highlighting the base’s mission. The show started off with an introduction from Weeks followed by a glimpse into the wing’s everyday mission and then led into a high-tempo highlight performance by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. The clip also featured a special shout-out from Maj. Michelle Curran, lead solo pilot for the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, flying the No. 5 jet, to Columbus AFB community and to Weeks on her Air Force career and time as a Thunderbird pilot. Over the next several hours, every half hour, a new video premiered. A majority of the acts and demo teams that were supposed to be present during the actual air show were showcased. In addition, many aircraft from the Air Force’s inventory were also highlighted, displaying the vast spectrum of airpower. The day finished with a video showing a Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training graduation ceremony from earlier in the day. Eleven pilots from SUPT Class 20 12/13, earned their silver wings April 24, culminating more than a year in pilot training.
