The U.S. Department of Defense’s (DOD) Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (OLDCC) has invited the Alamogordo Public School District to apply for a grant through the Public Schools on Military Installations (PSMI) program to replace the existing Holloman Middle School on Holloman Air Force Base, N.M.

Funding from the OLDCC grant will be supplemented with funding from state and local school district funds. Holloman Middle School serves approximately 200 students in grades sixth through eighth grade.

This project will improve the quality of life and educational services for military students.

“Quality schools and the education of military connected students remains a top priority for military families,” said LaurieAnn Goodier, 49th Wing Child and Youth Education Services-School Liaison. “Having schools on the installation is one reason families choose to reside on base. The climate and culture of both Holloman schools provide not only a focus on academics, but an immediate sense of belonging for our highly mobile students, both of which are key components to the quality of life of our military youth.”

Funding for the grant is provided under the OLDCC’s Public Schools on Military Installations Program. This program of assistance is available by invitation only, based upon a school’s placement on the prioritized listing and the availability of appropriations.

In 2018, Holloman Middle School was prioritized at number 50 on the PSMI assessment. The prioritization of schools are assessed on the severity of the condition and capacity deficiencies to award fiscal resources to public schools on military installations.

“Being invited to apply for the PSMI grant is the culmination of close working relationships with our community partners and educators, particularly Alamogordo Public School leadership,” said Col. Bryan Callahan, 49th WG vice commander. “Without close partnerships, we would not be able to support our military children and families. This event brings us one step closer to ensuring our military children receive quality education.”
