JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas – The Studies and Analysis Squadron at Headquarters, Air Education and Training Command was recently recognized at the Air Force-level with awards in analytics.

The SAS Force Development Team was named the USAF’s “Analytic Team of the Year,” while Maj. Brian Morrison, the unit’s Force Development flight commander, earned an honorable mention in the USAF “Combat Analyst of the Year” competition.

“Using analytics, the Air Force continues to find ways to more effectively inform decision-making for our leaders so they can monitor trends and patterns in contested, joint all-domain environments and in our business practices, giving them the ability to spot and resolve issues quickly through data,” said Lt. Col. Katie Batterton, SAS commander.  “While our work is AETC focused, we have Air Force wide impacts and the judges were blown away by the analytic work of our team. Our Airmen work hard year-round and it’s wonderful to be recognized by HAF for our contributions to the force.”

During the award period of calendar year 2020, the SAS Force Development team completed numerous projects including:

  • Visualization of medical data and Airmen retention to improve medical waiver decisions;
  • Development of cloud-based tools to visualize the flying training pipeline and instructor pilot utilization;
  • Execution of six Acquisition Category III operational tests in support of AETC training systems;
  • Analyzing data to inform senior leaders on topics like diversity and inclusion;
  • Building COVID-19 data dashboards;
  • Defining the training system foundations for the B-21 Raider and T-7A Redhawk

Morrison earned an honorable mention based on the strength of his work while deployed as the Special Operations Joint Task Force-Afghanistan and NATO Special Operations Component Command assessments cell director.  Morrison built innovative analytic models improving airpower response times and checkpoint defenses, as well as wrote Congressional reports providing strategic insights to Headquarters-Resolute Support and U.S. senior leaders.

AETC SAS previously won the team award for analytics in 2009.
