Take advantage of Energy Awareness Month Published Oct. 20, 2010 By 47th Flying Training Wing public affairs LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- October is Energy Awareness Month and Laughlin AFBs 47th Civil Engineering Squadron is taking steps to ensure Laughlin members are educated on the subject. The 47th CES energy manager will be at base club Oct. 26, from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. to discuss several energy-related topics and ways Laughlin AFB members can conserve energy. Topics that will be discussed include: - If you pay taxes, you are paying for energy used on base - If we save one percent in energy, it would equate to $42,400 per year for the base - A ceiling fan can reduce perceived temperature by five degrees - Turning your thermostat up by two degrees Fahrenheit in the summer can save your air conditioner 16 percent in energy - Every five lights you change from incandescent to compact fluorescent can save $9 per month - Turning off a television larger than 32 inches while not being watched can save $8 per month - Fluorescent light bulbs typically heat up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit - Turning off your monitor and task lighting when you are not at your desk saves electricity and reduces the heat load on the air conditioner - A leaky toilet can waste more than 10,000 gallons of water a year - Laptop computers draw 15 to 25 watts of electricity compared to 150 watts for a desktop computer and monitor
