Iconic Icarus statue rededication ceremony at AFIT

  • Published
The statue of Icarus, a common sight in the entrance atrium of the National Museum of the United States Air Force, will be rededicated at its new permanent home on the Air Force Institute of Technology campus, Sept. 21, at 4:00 p.m.

The Icarus Memorial commemorates the graduates of the AFIT who have given their lives in service to our country.

Brigadier General Walter Givhan, Air Force Institute of Technology commandant, and Dr. Robert Calico, AFIT, Graduate School of Engineering and Management (past) Dean, will preside over the ceremony.

In 1998 the AFIT Foundation, a private, tax-exempt, not-for-profit corporation, incorporated in the State of Ohio for the purpose of furthering the goals of the institute, initiated, commissioned, and funded, through contributions, the construction of the Icarus Memorial.

The AFIT Foundation determined the ancient Greek legend of Daedalus and his son Icarus captured the dream of flight and the associated risks of flying.

The ceremony on Tuesday is in conjunction with the AFIT Heritage Symposium, a two day event, scheduled for Sept 21-22. The symposium celebrates AFIT's achievements over the past 90 years and its vision for the future. The event will feature tours, speeches from AFIT alumni, a golf outing, and the symposium will end with a distinguished graduate dinner.
