Air Education and Training Command announced an Altus Airman as the 2009 Logistics Readiness Noncommissioned Officer of the year award winner.

Nominees for this award were evaluated on their overall ability, knowledge, their contributions to unit mission and their professional military qualities.

Master Sgt. Howard Sik, 97th Logistics Readiness Squadron, said he thanks everyone that he works with on a daily basis.

"I have to credit all the people around me working hard just the same," Sergeant Sik said.

Among his accomplishments, Sergeant Sik was identified as a professional performer during the recent AETC Unit Compliance Inspection for rectifying 86 staff assistance visit deficiencies. Additionally, he created an Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century electronic deployment folder process. AETC officials identified his process as an initiative for future use by the Air Force. Sergeant Sik also reengineered the installation support agreement program by verifying the accuracy and currency of 77 documents and was responsible for returning $438,000 in reimbursable items.

Sergeant Sik said that said that in order to be considered for an award, there are certain things Airmen can do to increase their chances.

"I would recommend to not just do your job, but to take pride in doing your job well," Sergeant Sik said. "Always get into the details, whether it be in the Air Force Instructions, local processes or anything. Ensure you are fulfilling 100 percent of requirements and constantly looking at better ways to accomplish the mission."

Sergeant Sik's selection as the AETC Readiness NCO of the Year was not based solely on his overall abilities and knowledge but also for his extracurricular efforts and his involvement in the local community.

Sergeant Sik is a member of the Altus Top 3, and has chaired the wing's Warrior of the Month program. He has served on both the 97th LRS and 97th Mission Support Group Airman and NCO of the quarter boards and volunteered with both Operation Retreat Haven and Habitat for Humanity.

Sergeant Sik said that his wife and daughter have been pivotal in his service and for earning this award.

"I credit it to the hard work, sometimes long hours and an understanding, supportive spouse," Sergeant Sik said.
