The Luke Air Force Base Chapel raised more than $4,200 to help with relief efforts in Haiti during January and February. But, money alone wasn't enough for one chaplain.

Chaplain (Capt.) Carlos Brito, 56th Fighter Wing protestant chaplain, decided he wanted to donate his time and help the people of Haiti in person.

"I searched for official temporary-duty assignments, but there weren't any available for me," he said. "So, instead of going in uniform, I went to Haiti as a civilian from April 30 to May 7."

The week was spent building a house for a family who lost their home in the earthquake, distributing food and medication, and visiting with patients at a clinic, Chaplain Brito said.

"The Baptist Haiti Mission identified more than 1,100 homes that were destroyed in the earthquake," he said.

"While I was there I had the opportunity to work with seven others and build one, 20 x 10 x 12 foot house."

Chaplain Brito said that even four months after the earthquake, there was still tremendous devastation in Haiti.

"There is still a lot of work to be done in Haiti," he said. "I would like to go back next year to build more homes and serve at the clinic. But next time, I would like to go with a group of Luke members."
