The United States Armed Forces is showing appreciation to separated or retired service members that went above and beyond by serving their country as an affected member of stop-loss.

"Sometimes when a separating or retiring service member has an approved date of separation or retirement they are involuntarily retained on active duty past that date as a result of stop-loss," said Capt. Darren Hill, 82nd Force Support Squadron military personnel section chief. "This mainly happens when an individual is too valuable to the mission at that time and is still needed on active duty."

As a result, individuals with an approved DOS or DOR from Sept. 11, 2001 - Sept. 30, 2009, that were retained on active duty past this date because of stop-loss may apply for their retroactive stop-loss special payment from Oct. 21, 2009 - Oct. 21, 2010.

"These affected individuals may be eligible to receive a retroactive stop-loss special payment of $500 for each extra month they served after their DOS or retirement date," he said.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, stop-loss has been implemented in the Air Force for Operation Enduring Freedom from Oct. 2, 2001 - Jan. 31, 2003, and Operation Iraqi Freedom from May 2, 2003 - Dec. 31, 2003.

"The retroactive stop-loss special pay will hopefully let people know that their efforts were greatly appreciated and did not go unnoticed," Captain Hill said.
