The 59th Medical Wing launched a new Web page for Department of Defense beneficiaries seeking information about H1N1 influenza Oct. 6.

The Web page, located at www.whmc.af.mil, by clicking the H1N1 icon, offers adult and child self-assessments to help people determine if they need to see a doctor. The checklists are based on national research conducted by the Emory University School of Medicine.

Most cases of H1N1 influenza are mild and resolve on their own with time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most people with flu do not need medical care.

"The self-assessment checklists are great tools to consider using that would allow patients to first self-triage," said Col. (Dr.) Keith Morita, 59th Medical Wing, deputy chief of medical staff. "We encourage everyone to take a self-assessment if they have flu-like symptoms, and then follow the recommended actions."

The Web page addresses the H1N1 vaccine, the priority groups for vaccination, preventive care and weekly CDC webcast updates. Information concerning sick leave policies for active-duty military and federal employees is also available.

Links to other resources, such as hotline numbers, the DoD Pandemic Flu Watchboard, CDC and Texas Flu.org, provide additional information for specific groups.

"This flu season we expect a large number of patients," Colonel Morita said. "The 59th Medical Wing and 37th Medical Group are working diligently to monitor the H1N1 influenza and continuously update our health care workers and patients with the latest guidance from CDC."

Colonel Morita said the Web site is a critical tool to educate and ensure our patients get the right level of care.
