Assignment policies change for instructors, recruiters Published July 30, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Candy Miller 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Assignment policies governing military training leaders, instructors and recruiters recently reverted back to assignment availability code 50, which provides a definite four-year maximum time on station. Linda Howard, 82nd Training Wing chief of personnel relocations, said in the former AAC 43, base of preferences were not approved if the installation had 85 percent or more manpower in the career field at that base. With the new code 50s, BOPs can be approved up to100 percent manpower. She said Air Education and Training Command migrated from AAC 50 to AAC 43 in 2006, which required a four-year minimum and five-year maximum tour due to budget constraints. That policy resulted in fewer BOP approvals and an average time on station of four years and seven months. "AAC 43 hurt the Air Force's ability to recruit for special duty positions," Ms. Howard said. "People with special duty assignments didn't know when they would be able to (get a permanent change of station). They could've received orders anytime between the minimum four years and maximum five years and the undetermined dates left our people wondering when they would PCS." She said previously approved assignments will remain intact for those entering or leaving duty as instructors, educators and recruiters. Those who have completed the four year minimum of code 43 will update to code 50 and the duty will expire April 2010. Those who had ACC 43s that expired between June 2009 and July 2010 will update with AAC 50 and expire July 2010. ACC 43s with expiration dates August 2010 or later will update to AAC 50 and expire four years from effective duty date. Special duty members can now apply for BOP after 36 to 39 months time of service. Ms. Howard said extensions beyond four years is an exception to policy that requires approval from the AETC vice commander. For more information contact the personnel relocations office at 676-6233.
