The ground-to-air transmitter and receiver site was renamed the Melendez Radio Site in honor of Staff Sgt. Luis Melendez, a former Columbus AFB Airman who was killed in a helicopter crash in support of Operation Enduring Freedom Feb. 17, 2006. "We are here today to remember one of our fallen heroes," said Col. Roger Watkins, 14th Flying Training Wing commander, at the ceremony. "We will remember all those who have laid down their lives so we can exercise and enjoy our freedom. For all of us still wearing the uniform today, that is our charge. Let us not forget." Sergeant Melendez began his Air Force career in October 1995, where after completing basic military training and technical training, he was stationed with the 100th Communications Squadron, Royal Air Force Mildenhall, England. Following his time in England, he was stationed at Columbus Air Force Base as a ground radio maintenance journeyman with the 14th Communications Squadron. "He (Sergeant Melendez) displayed his professionalism," said Maj. Leo Lawson, 14th CS commander. "He greatly affected the Airmen under his leadership ... and set the example for others to follow. "Even as we dedicate this building to him, we will continue to honor him by continuing to strive for excellence." Sergeant Melendez's wife, Mi'chele Cetto, and his two sons, Adrian and Gabriel, attended the event and joined Colonel Watkins in unveiling the memorial plaque. "Thank you for bringing hope to your troops and for remembering them," Ms. Cetto said.
