Air Force Association awards AETC aerospace units Published Feb. 13, 2009 RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Air Education and Training Command officials recently announced its winners for the 2009 Air Force Association Aerospace Awards, recognizing civilians, units or groups of individuals for outstanding contributions to national defense in science, engineering, arts, education, training and overall performance. The aerospace award winners are: Theodore Von Karman category The 335th Weather Training Flight, Keesler AFB, Miss., is the Department of Defense's only weather training school-house. The flight conducted nine major course rewrites and validations using the latest weather forecasting technology tools and concepts, which enhanced student training. The flight also researched, proposed and developed a plan to incorporate electronic book technology into two courses, eliminating more than 20,000 pages of documents, saving the Air Force $10,000 annually. Finally, the flight was handpicked to serve as experts and played a vital role in the success of six major Air Force weather forecasting projects. David C. Schilling category The 37th Operations Support Squadron, Lackland AFB, Texas, resourcefully expanded its 16-hour operations to a 24-hour surge and delivered flawless air traffic control and ground support for federal, state and city emergency operations during hurricanes Gustav and Ike. The squadron's actions earned praise from the U.S. President and guaranteed the safe evacuation of more than 400 special needs patients and the rescue of 12 victims from disaster areas. Citation of Honor category The 314th Air Wing, Little Rock AFB, Ark., graduated more than 1,800 students from the DoD and 34 allied nations, replenishing C-130 combat aircrew capability to fight the war on terrorism. The wing garnered the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and earned an "Excellent" for its recent Operational Readiness Inspection, and was recognized for 17 "Best Practices," the best safety program and the best maintenance team in the command.
