The Air Education and Training Command 2009 Commander in Chief Special Recognition Awards were announced Oct. 27 and one Sheppard winner captured individual and installation excellence.

Staff Sgt. Terry A. Smith, 82nd Civil Engineering Squadron NCO in charge of interior electric, was recognized for individual excellence in this year's command-level CINC awards.

"It meant a lot to be considered. (But,) to win at the AETC level ... I feel good about it," Sergeant Smith said.

Sergeant Smith said he didn't do any special preparations or adjust his daily work to win the award - he was just doing his job.

"I deployed, helped with big projects and (worked to fix) situations around the base," Sergeant Smith said. "I love being an electrician and it's fun. It's a business, but it's fun. (Enjoying my job) helps me with being able to do my job."

Sergeant Smith credited his leadership for giving him the opportunity to lead mission-impacting projects. In addition, he recognized his coworkers and supervisors for trusting him to take on some electrical challenges by himself.

His individual success wasn't the only accolade he received. Sergeant Smith was included in 82nd CES's reward of the CINC's special recognition for installation excellence award.

"It's great that not only did I win, the whole squadron won," he said.

Sergeant Smith and 82nd CES's award packages will now compete at the Air Force 2009 CINC Special Recognition Awards.
