  • Published
Air Education and Training Command officials recently announced the winner of the 2008 Joan Orr Air Force Spouse of the Year award:

The command named Danielle M. Hanson, 366th Training Squadron, Detachment 7, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. This award annually recognizes the significant contributions made by non-military spouses of Air Force military members.

Ms. Hanson is a dedicated Girl Scout Brownie leader mentoring 20 girls into tomorrow's leaders. She led the troop through an annual cookie sale raising more than $2,000 toward leadership-based activities and field trips.

She coordinated a collection of more than 7,000 box tops worth $700 for a local elementary school. She organized the 2007 Teachers' Appreciation Week activities by cooking and serving food to 55 teachers, staff and volunteers. Ms. Hanson eased stress on caregivers by supervising a holiday shop event allowing 300 children to buy presents for parents.

She supported the local women's shelter by collecting donations and distributing nine care baskets to the shelter. Ms. Hanson began a pen-pal program between 60 Ugandan and 65 local elementary school children which provided a very unique learning experience for all. She helped raise more than $2,500 by creating an avenue for AIDS epidemic widows to sell handmade items.

She will now compete at the Air Force level.
