Martin Gerst Air Education and Training Command Public Affairs RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The commander for the Studies and Analysis Squadron at Air Education and Training Command here was recently named the Air Force's Outstanding Scientist. Lt. Col. Scott N. Long received the award in the Senior Military category. The award recognizes the top U.S. Air Force scientist for making noteworthy, significant contributions to technology and/or solving technical problems in sustainment, testing, training, or advancements of Air Force systems. "My wife, Marti, and I were very surprised when General Lessel called to tell us the news," said Colonel Long, whose squadron is under Maj. Gen Erwin F. Lessel III, Director of Plans, Requirements and Programs at AETC. "We were absolutely blown away! All four children came running to the kitchen to find out what all the excitement was -- then they started jumping and dancing too! It is a tremendous honor." Colonel Long oversaw operational testing of the $850 million T-38 avionics upgrade program -- assuring the command's aircraft are properly modified. He also innovated and validated a scoring system for selecting pilots that improves training success prediction by 50 percent. "Colonel Long's accomplishments reflect the outstanding capability and teamwork exhibited by our Studies and Analysis Squadron," said General Lessel. "His leadership and successes have significantly contributed to the innovative and enhanced delivery of flying training and technical training for the U.S. Air Force." Lt. Col. Long attended a ceremony Oct. 5 at his alma mater, the Air Force Academy. "I want to say thanks to General Lessel for the great support he gives the Studies and Analysis Squadron in our mission to keep Air Education and Training Command decision makers informed, and of course for nominating me for the award," Colonel Long said. "Thanks also to the entire SAS team that does outstanding test and analysis work which I am privileged to participate in and contribute to -- I really have one of the best jobs in the Air Force!"
