Wilford Hall/BAMC graduate 260 healthcare professionals Published June 18, 2007 By Sue Campbell 59th Medical Wing Public Affairs LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium graduated 260 healthcare professionals in a ceremony June 8 at the University of Texas Health Science Center. One of the largest graduate medical education programs in the nation, SAUSHEC maintains a close partnership with San Antonio's University of Texas Health Science Center, Wilford Hall Medical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center. The guest speaker for the graduation was the Senior Vice President of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Dr. Dale C. Smith. During the award portion of the ceremony, the commander's awards for original medical research were presented to 15 SAUSHEC graduates for research in various fields. The Major John H. Gillespie Award for outstanding intern went to Capt. Karla Adams, WHMC Pediatrics; and Capt. Ryan Haney, BAMC Internal Medicine. The award is named in honor of Major Gillespie, a BAMC anesthesiologist, who was killed in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm, and recognizes excellence in medical knowledge, clinical judgment and medical ethics. The Major David S. Berry Award for outstanding resident went to Capt. Claire Gould, WHMC Obstetrics/Gynecology; and Maj. Keith Lemmon, WHMC Adolescent Medicine. This award goes to the graduating residents who best exemplify the spirit and character of Maj. David Berry, a SAUSHEC pediatric faculty member who was murdered while assigned to Korea in 2000. The Outstanding Program Coordinator Award went to Nancy Montgomery, WHMC Neurology Program. The SAUSHEC Outstanding Faculty Award went to Dr. Daniel Battafarano, BAMC Internal Medicine; and Maj. Kaustubh Joshi, WHMC Psychiatry. The John D. Roscelli Award for SAUSHEC's Outstanding Program Director was awarded to Col. Elisabeth Stafford, Adolescent Medicine.
