President Bush spent New Year's Day visiting wounded and injured servicemembers at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, among them Maj. Marc Montgomery, the Laughlin instructor pilot injured when his T-38C crashed in December.

"I can't think of a better way to start 2006 than here at this fantastic hospital," the president said of his visit with the troops and hospital staff at BAMC. He called the troops "courageous" and commended their sacrifices to promote democracy.

The president also said the hospital was full of healers and compassionate people who care deeply about our men and women in uniform. He also said he was inspired by medical staffers who work around the clock to help ease suffering and save lives and family members who have kept their faith through adversity.

"I think we see God's work here every day," the president said.

At the hospital, the president met with patients and their families at the Amputee Care Center that opened in January 2005. He also visited the intensive care unit and the Burn Center, which has treated 388 service members wounded in the war on terror.

The Brooke Army Medical Center offers the Defense Department's only burn center and one of just two amputee centers, and has treated more than 2,300 wounded troops since October 2001. (Information compiled from American Forces Press Service and White House press releases.)
