Year-long deployments have many benefits, entitlements

  • Published
While most deployments are around 120 days for Air Force members, some are much longer.

Currently there are approximately 200 positions available for year-long deployments.

These deployments have certain entitlements not associated with typical-length deployments.

"We want to make sure everyone is aware of the entitlements associated with the 365-Day Indeterminate TDY or extended deployment," said Capt. Marx Lim, chief of entitlements and benefits with Air Education and Training Command Manpower and Personnel. "One thing to point out is the deployment doesn't even have to be a year."

Indeterminate TDY applies when a member's TDY order does not provide for return to the permanent duty station and the TDY is more than 20 weeks.

"There are many benefits to volunteering for an Indeterminate TDY," Captain Lim said. "These range from getting short-tour credit to extra pay."

Below are some of the general entitlements for this type of deployment:

-- Members with dependents who are selected for indeterminate TDYs may relocate dependents at government expense.

-- Dependents who relocate in conjunction with a member's indeterminate TDY are authorized a dislocation allowance.

-- Household good shipments and/or non-temporary storage are authorized within permanent change of station weight limits IAW JFTR, paras U4755, U4770-C and U4770-D.

-- Members who have privately owned vehicles may have their vehicles stored locally as determined by the installation commander when TDY is more than 30 days to a contingency operation.

-- Members under Indeterminate TDYs are entitled to per diem while deployed.

-- Family Separation Allowance is payable at the rate of $250 a month.

-- Members may be eligible for Hardship Duty Pay at rates of $50, $100 or $150 a month.
