Marines assigned to Marine Corps Detachment Goodfellow celebrated the U.S. Marine Corps’ 247th birthday at the McNease Convention Center, San Angelo, Texas, Nov. 4.

Focusing on heritage and the importance of the Marines that make up the U.S.M.C., the evening consisted of a multitude of traditional events. The ball consisted of setting and displaying the POW/MIA table, singing of the Marine Corps Hymn, the reading of U.S. Marine Corps Gen. John LeJeune’s birthday message, the cutting of the birthday cake, and a speech from former U.S. Marine Corps cryptologic linguist Zachary Byron.

Byron was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device and the Purple Heart for his heroic actions while deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
