Mackenzie Wilson, a 19-year-old Oregon State University cadet, died as result of a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HUMMWV) accident. At about 11:30 a.m. on the day of the accident, a HUMMWV carrying three AFROTC cadets traveled westbound from the Saylor Creek Range tower to the main range building, when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing the HUMMWV to roll 180 degrees and land on its roof. Wilson, who was in the front passenger seat, and one of the other passengers were ejected, while the driver was not. The vehicle rolled over on to Wilson, causing fatal injuries. AFROTC cadre and cadets immediately responded to the accident and initiated life-saving actions on Wilson until first responders arrived. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two cadets were transported to the hospital with injuries and released. Based on the coroner’s report, Cadet Wilson’s cause of death was asphyxia due to blunt force trauma involving the head, chest and upper abdomen, which were caused by the HMMWV accident.
