Goodfellow celebrates Women's Equality Day Published Aug. 29, 2024 By Airman 1st Class James Salellas 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 17th Training Wing celebrated the anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment at the Cressman Dining Facility, on Aug. 26. In 1971, the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as Women's Equality Day. August also marks the month Congress ratified the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote. This year marks the 53rd Women's Equality Day across the United States. “We need to look back in time and see how far we've come.” said Senior Airman Mikayla Marthiens, 17th Training Support Squadron quality assurance evaluator. “For example, my grandma couldn't have a bank account without a man’s approval until the 1960s. We don't even think about what our mothers, our grandmothers and even our great-grandmothers have gone through. It's about reflecting on the past, examining the present, and hoping for a brighter future.” While Women's Equality Day is a U.S. observance, it resonates globally as many countries continue to work towards achieving gender equality and ensuring women's rights are protected.
