Honoring A1C Jacobson: A ruck to remember Sept. 30, 2024

Airman 1st Class Elizabeth Jacobson, a defender assigned to the 17th Security Forces Squadron at Goodfellow Air Force Base from 2003-2005, was deployed with the 586th Expeditionary SFS at Camp Bucca, Iraq. On Sept. 28, 2005, at the age of 21, Jacobson was killed when an improvised explosive device struck her convoy. She was the first security forces Airman and the first female service member to die in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Her bravery has since been memorialized at bases all over the world.

The 17th Training Wing came together en masse to honor the memory of Airman 1st Class Elizabeth Jacobson through a memorial ruck at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Sep. 27, 2024.

“Her life stands as a testament to the incredible sacrifices that our men and women in uniform make every day,” said Col. Angelina Maguinness, 17th Training Wing commander. “Elizabeth's memory lives on here at Goodfellow Air Force Base, where we have named our South Gate in her honor. The annual ruck march that we hold in her memory symbolizes the weight we all carry in our hearts for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
