The Altus Chamber of Commerce has named Wichita Falls, Texas, as the winner of the 2024 Altus Trophy for its outstanding support of Sheppard Air Force Base.

Every year, the Altus Chamber partners with Air Education and Training Command officials to recognize a community that goes above and beyond in supporting an AETC wing or tenant unit.

“Wichita Falls exemplifies what it means to be a military community,” said Brig. Gen. Paul G. Filcek, 82nd Training Wing commander. “The community’s commitment to Sheppard Air Force Base strengthens our mission and enhances the quality of life for Airmen and their families.”

Sheppard AFB plays a vital role in training, with 50% of all enlisted Airmen passing through at some point in their careers, with over 60K graduates worldwide each year. The base also hosts the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program, which has trained more than 8,300 fighter pilots since its inception from the 14 partner nations. The base contributes a $2.2 billion economic impact annually to the local economy.  This deep-rooted connection with Wichita Falls, driven by community leaders collaborating across both wings drives innovative programs that benefit both Airmen and the community.

“For more than eight decades, Wichita Falls and Sheppard Air Force Base have cultivated a partnership built on mutual respect, support and collaboration,” Ron Kitchens, Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce president, said. “We are committed to ensuring Sheppard remains a cornerstone of our region and that our Airmen and their families feel welcomed and valued."

The official Altus Trophy presentation will take place later this year with Sheppard AFB leadership, Wichita Falls civic leaders and AETC officials.
