42d Air Base Wing recognizes Crusader of the Month Published June 2, 2026 By Eric Sharman Maxwell Public Affairs MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Cruz Chavez, a financial operations technician assigned to the 42d Comptroller Squadron Financial Management Flight, has been selected as the 42d Air Base Wing’s Crusader of the Month for May, 2026, for his attention to detail, customer service and commitment to ensuring Airmen receive the pay and entitlements they have earned. Chavez supports financial operations across the 42d Air Base Wing, Air University and mission partners throughout Maxwell Air Force Base. His daily responsibilities include reviewing military pay records, processing separation payments and assisting customers with a wide range of financial matters. According to his leadership, Chavez distinguishes himself through meticulous reviews of pay records and a dedication to resolving issues that directly affect Airmen and their families. That commitment recently led Chavez to identify a long-standing discrepancy involving the clothing allowance program for instructors assigned to the Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy and Chief Leadership Academy. While researching customer inquiries, Chavez conducted a comprehensive review of instructor rosters and pay records, discovering the program had been mismanaged for more than two years. His findings enabled leadership to assemble a complete corrective package, resulting in 25 SNCOA instructors receiving more than $12,000 in clothing allowances to which they were entitled. “His attention to detail when reviewing pay records and separation payments is key to members being paid correctly and in a timely manner,” said Tech. Sgt. Karsten Seale, flight chief of financial operations for the 42d CPTS. Seale said Chavez exemplifies the Air Force core values through both his work ethic and willingness to serve others. “It’s not always easy telling people bad news about debts or overpayments, but he provides them with information and a path forward,” Seale said. “He is always willing to help his friends both on and off duty, and he consistently goes above and beyond to take care of our customers.” Originally from Los Angeles, Chavez enjoys video games, soccer and reading in his free time. The Crusader of the Month program recognizes Airmen who demonstrate outstanding performance, leadership and dedication to the mission while embodying the Air Force core values of integrity first, service before self and excellence in all they do.
