Civic Leaders Learn the Pilot Training Ropes Published Aug. 26, 2026 By TSgt Javier Cruz 14th Flying Training Wing COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- The 14th Flying Training Wing opened its doors to local civic leaders June 29-30, 2026, offering an inside look at the rigorous journey of military aviation through the “A Day in the Life of a Pilot” initiative. The two-day immersion event brought community partners directly into the heart of Columbus Air Force Base’s mission: Train World Class Aviators. The initiative was established by Col. James Blech, 14th Flying Training Wing Commander, out of a desire to deeply connect the surrounding Columbus community with the base's mission. By walking in the shoes of student pilots, civic leaders gained a firsthand understanding of how their local support directly impacts both pilot production and the overall quality of life for service members stationed here. "My awareness of the daily demands faced by the UPT students at Columbus Air Force Base has heightened,” said Sharon Johnson, Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau. “I have a profound respect and admiration for their daily courage and sacrifices. As a community leader, this first-hand perspective has strengthened my commitment to advocating for the initiatives and mission of Columbus Air Force Base”. The immersion began on June 29 with an introduction to the physical and physiological demands placed on student pilots. Local leaders including Mrs. Sharon Johnson, Mrs. Brittany Cofield, Dr. Thomas Easterling, Mr. Matt Bogue, Dr. Bryan Farrell, and Mr. Blake Neely, underwent aviation physiology training and Aircrew Flight Equipment (AFE) training. They learned the mechanics of T-6 Texan II egress and parachute systems before being fitted for actual flight gear and receiving standard flight physicals. “My biggest takeaway was probably just the sheer level of coordination, professionalism, and dedication it takes to execute the mission at CAFB,” said Bryan Farrell, Director, Raspet Flight Research Laboratory, Mississippi State University. “To see all the units dedicated to training world class pilots and get the pilot experience put into perspective for me the required teamwork and necessary commitment. My experience also very clearly illustrated the physical and mental demands which accentuates the base’s commitment to promoting enhanced physical fitness and healthy food options”. The second day elevated the experience to the operational side of pilot training. After a formal morning briefing, the civic leaders split into two groups to experience the high-tempo environment of the airfield. While one group tested their skills in state-of-the-art flight simulators, the other group observed live flight line operations and toured the Runway Supervisory Unit (RSU) and the Air Traffic Control Tower. The itinerary also highlighted the Comprehensive Readiness for Air Crew Flying Training (CRAFT) facility and the Tactical Athlete Program (TAP), which treats student aviators like Division I athletes by optimizing their strength, conditioning, and cognitive performance. “Being on base reminded me of the difference between knowing something and feeling it,” said Thomas G. Easterling III, Director for Academic Affairs, The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. “I might have known that everyone on base must pull in the same direction to accomplish important goals. However, until I was on base, I didn’t feel the esprit de corps that emanated from everyone here, from the youngest Airman to the Wing Commander”. Units coordinate with key groups to communicate how the modernized pilot training enterprise contributes to the Department of the Air Force's combat readiness. Utilizing modernized systems including CRAFT and advanced simulation training, Columbus AFB and the 14th Flying Training Wing prepare the next generation of pilots for a contested future combat environment. "This experience gave me a new appreciation for the incredible team and depth of talent it takes to fulfill the mission of training world-class aviators at the 14th Flying Training Wing,” said Matt Bogue, President, Dutch Oil Company/Sprint Mart. “Every person I met, from civilian employees and enlisted Airmen to officers and wing leadership, demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication, and professionalism regardless of their role in the mission. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in a Day in the Life at Columbus Air Force Base. It was a truly memorable experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life”. The 14th Flying Training Wing graduates approximately 700 student pilots annually through its intensive 52-week Undergraduate Pilot Training program, flying an average of 260 sorties daily. Events like "A Day in the Life of a Pilot" reinforce the critical bond between the military installation and the supportive Mississippi community that stands behind them.
