Col. Michael L. Downs, 17th Training Wing Commander, spoke during the Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Bentwood Country Club, March 9.

The annual luncheon supports businesses in and around San Angelo and congratulates outstanding Airmen from Goodfellow Air Force Base.

The luncheon began with a meal followed by commercials from Chamber of Commerce sponsors. After the sponsors, Jamie Atkin, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors chairman, introduced the New Centennial Club members. Dr. Carol A. Bonds, Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs committee, presented the Order of Merit to Tech. Sgt. Curtrell L. Gibson, 17th Force Support Squadron Airman Leadership School instructor. The Order of Merit is awarded for outstanding service to country and community.

“It is said that the heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others,” said Bonds. “Sgt. Gibson helped plan and implement over 20 volunteer activities in the last year.”

Downs then spoke about Phil Neighbors, the late Chamber of Commerce Chairman, and his contributions to the Airmen at Goodfellow.

“There’s a fence around our base, but from my perspective we are part of San Angelo,” said Downs. “And I’m very proud of that thought. And I think nobody really gave more to our Airmen, to our base, than Phil Neighbors. He was a remarkable man, and I think we all know that.”

Downs gave a plaque and the flag flown at half-staff over Goodfellow to Susan M. Neighbors to commemorate the passing of her husband Phil Neighbors.

Downs then recognized Airmen from base for their contributions to the Air Force and the San Angelo community.

The luncheon finished with a presentation about the base by Tech. Sgt. Douglas J. Earl, 316th Training Squadron instructor.
