Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas --

When Ariana Meza donned her very own flight suit issued by the 47th Flying Training Wing on March 18, she became a pilot for the day.

The "Pilot for a Day" program gives local ailing children the opportunity to live a day in the life of a Laughlin pilot.

For Meza, a 6-year-old Del Rio native diagnosed with leukemia, the day started with the welcoming sound of clapping and cheering as she walked through the doors to the 85th Flying Training Squadron, where she would meet the squadron and other Team XL members during a breakfast prepared by squadron members and their spouses.

“Though she was very shy at first, those of us who were with her the entire day could see how much she enjoyed everything,” said Capt. Paul Homsher, 85th FTS T-6A Texan II instructor pilot. “We were happy to see her and her family having a great time.”

During the day she visited the 85th FTS, tower, flight line and other areas that help continue the mission of flying.

“She had known about the trip for about a week, but the events of the day were a surprise for her,” said Reyes Meza, Ariana’s father. “She didn’t know what was going to happen.”

Despite the fact she had no idea what was coming, her parents said her excitement couldn’t be contained when she reached her favorite part.

“She had a busy schedule, and she enjoyed it all,” said Reyes. “Her favorite part was the tour of the fire department, but the entire day was pretty amazing.”

Volunteers that spent their time making the event happen were rewarded for their work at the end of the day when Ariana left with a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye.

“It was a great experience she’ll remember forever,” said Reyes.
