This historical photo shows the external battle damage to a B-26 Invader from an anti-aircraft shell on Dec. 8, 1952. The shell penetrated the cockpit, severely wounding the pilot and sending the aircraft into a dive before Tech. Sgt. James H. Ledford, the flight engineer, seized the controls and saved the crew.
