KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. --
The 81st Training Support Squadron’s Military Training Leader Course schoolhouse has a new home in Lott Hall, where the first course in the new building began July 17.
The instructors, formerly based in Allee Hall, only had a couple classrooms at their disposal. They now have access to a dedicated training area and resources.
“The new space is equipped with one large classroom, a CPR classroom and large conference room, as well as office spaces for each MTL instructor,” said Master Sgt. Jacob Overman, 2nd Air Force command military training superintendent. “The Lott Hall facility was designed with the purpose of highlighting where MTLs serve as well as the history and legacy of this small, but important, career field.”
The move was part of Maj. Gen. Mark Brown’s, former 2nd AF commander and current vice commander of Air Education and Training Command, vision to legitimize the corps and highlight the history behind MTLs.
“Keesler houses the only MTL School in the Air Force,” Overman said. “So giving [the instructors] their own state-of-the-art facility allows them to focus on and internalize what it means to mentor, train and lead our Airmen across the Air Education and Training Command enterprise.”
The instructors at Lott Hall will graduate 132 new MTLs per year, and their new space also features enough room to implement a future Advanced MTL Course.
After course completion, new MTLs can relocate to any of 43 Air Force or joint bases with schoolhouses.
“We hope that by expanding the MTL Course to focus on history, heritage and training, that when an Airman looks back at their time in technical training they’ll remember their MTL for the mentorship and development they provided,” Overman said. “MTLs play a vital role in the Air Force; they’re the bridge between the foundational knowledge learned in basic training and their operational experience after technical training.”
