12th Flying Training Wing

The 12th Flying Training Wing, headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, develops the next generation of Air Force aviators and enlisted aircrew by providing world-class flying training and education. The wing trains Airmen in the fundamentals of airmanship, instruction and leadership, preparing them for success in operational units across the Air Force. Through undergraduate Combat Systems Officer training, Pilot Instructor Training, Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals, Remotely Piloted Aircraft pilot indoctrination, enlisted aviator training, and other specialized programs, the 12th FTW produces skilled, adaptable, and combat-ready professionals capable of meeting the demands of today's complex operating environment while strengthening the future of American airpower.

58th SOW and the Continuum of Learning

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --  Headquarters Air Education and Training Command force development expert Masoud Rasti visited the 58th Special Operations Wing on Kirtland Air Force Base, April 24, to discuss the implementation of the Air Force’s newest training paradigm, the Continuum of Learning.

The Continuum of Learning initiative is a shift to better focus how Airmen learn by integrating education, training and experience in ways that allow them to learn anytime and anywhere throughout their careers. The end goal is to create a culture of lifelong learning.

Rasti briefed the 58th SOW senior leaders about the CoL and how it will provide all Airmen with an evolving system of learning that is adaptable and agile to ensure joint warfighting Airmen are ready for tomorrow’s complex warfighting environments.

“How we conducted training 30 years ago simply isn’t the way to be most effective today,” said Rasti. “Our adversaries have the same teaching technology that we do but how we apply the principle of training will allow us to become more agile.”

Rasti also discussed one of the five CoL’s initiatives, the Airman’s Learning Record. The ALR is a consolidation of an Airman’s entire training background in one online system and will be ready for launch in the upcoming months.

The 58th SOW senior leaders briefed Rasti about their current training missions and how they are implementing new innovative training techniques to better their Airmen's ability to learn their duties and increase their work performances.

“Transforming our current pipeline production training system into a more modern, learner-centric model, is exactly what we need to make our Airmen that much better,” said Col. Douglas Horne, 58th Special Operations Wing Vice Commander. “This training redesign is intended to give Airmen more flexibility in reaching their learning goals, which ultimately will help the Air Force increase mission effectiveness.”

Upon completion of the briefings, Rasti toured the 58th SOW, seeing some of its Airmen, aircraft and assets.

The tour concluded with a visit to the Monster Garage. The Monster Garage houses trainers and simulators, created from decommissioned aircraft that allow students to train on flight tasks while on the ground, saving the Air Force millions of dollars.

Public Affairs Information

Tours of the 12th Flying Training Wing are provided to various community organizations, high schools, businesses, and academic military recruitment programs to educate their members about the 12th FTW mission.

Due to the high volume of requests and limited public affairs resources, tours and static displays are limited.

Please submit all requests in writing to the 12th FTW Public Affairs by email to 12ftw.pa.1@us.af.mil at least three weeks but no more than six weeks in advance. You may also call 210-652-1272.

Tours are not available on weekends and may be cancelled at any time because of increased security measures or mission requirements. The 12th FTW does not host tours of Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph at-large. To schedule a tour of JBSA-Randolph, please contact JBSA-Randolph Public Affairs at 502abw.pa.official@us.af.mil or dial 210-652-4410.

If desired, requestors must arrange all meals. PA will provide contact information to base eateries. Modified tours will be granted for those with limited mobility - this must be stated on the tour request. If not stated, it is assumed that mobility is not an issue.
