GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE,Texas -- Goodfellow hosted the quarterly drill competition for students from the 312th Training Squadron, the 315th Training Squadron and the 316th Training Squadron to show off their drill and marching skills, at the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy April 19.
“This whole event is a great way for the squadrons to come together and show off their drill skills while also boosting student morale,” said Senior Airman Nicolas Moya, 17th Medical Group dental technician, and a judge at the drill competition.
The competition opened with a high speed elimination drill, where students were required to respond to all drill commands to avoid elimination. If a facing movement wasn’t completed in time or the student performed an incorrect movement, they were eliminated.
Each squadron then performed the regulation drill using standard maneuvers from memory. The squadrons were judged based on military bearing and precise execution of drill movements.
Lastly, each squadron performed their own choreographed routines. This included marching to modern songs and rifle routines. Orders were not given; instead the whole team had to memorize their place and exact movements. Military bearing had to be kept the whole time even when mistakes were made.
“We are grateful that we had this opportunity to drill,” said Airman Bevin Castro, a 312th TRS student. “We were able to show off our military bearing, our discipline, and the dedication we put into this as individuals and as a team.”
