SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas – Thousands of dedicated and determined cyclists blaze through Sheppard AFB, Aug. 24, 2019, during the 38th Annual Hotter'N Hell Hundred – the largest single-day cycling event in the nation.
The race draws in riders of varying skill levels from all over the globe to participate in multiple race routes and distances, some of which stretch through Sheppard.
As the cyclists cruise through Sheppard, they have interesting sights to see.
More than 100 Airmen lined Fifth Avenue on Sheppard to create “Airmen’s Alley,” a place to encourage and cheer for the participants.
Sandy Shawver and her daughter, Charlotte Shawver, HHH participants, said riding through the base is the highlight of the event.
“It’s the best,” Sandy said. “This is our ninth time riding in the HHH and we look forward to hearing the Airmen hoot and holler for us every year.”
There is also “Airpower Alley,” where multiple aircraft are displayed for photo opportunities and Airmen are there to socialize with riders.
Lastly, the 82nd Medical Group set up a tent for first-aid, food, drinks and other necessities as the last rest stop for HHH riders. It’s also one of the more popular stops along the route.
Capt. Nisek Patel, 82nd Medical Group family practice clinic doctor, spoke about his first HHH experience.
“We are here to provide care for dehydrated patients and handle any sort of wounds or lacerations,” he said. “It’s a really cool event; everyone just looks like they’re having a great time.”
