Airman 1st Class Breanna Carter was chosen as the July Medic of the Month where she fully embraces patient safety using the Trusted Care principles. Carter has led multiple safety huddles and crafted schedules to maximize team efficiency for over 400 patients. Her efforts help patients to understand the importance of health care and their role as a part of their own treatment team, here at Goodfellow and as they progress, which is directly in line with the 17th Training Wing commander’s intent of creating lifelong learners. Not only does Carter have a patient-safety mindset but she has a warrior’s heart and she’s been pivotal in the success of the Warrior Ancillary Specialized Program. Carter is a wingman, leader, and warrior. Col. Lauren Byrd, 17th Medical Group commander and the 17th MSG are proud to call her a Cobra Medic!

How does your job support the 17th Training Wing’s mission?

As cheesy as it sounds, family readiness goes hand in hand with Airman readiness. By taking care of the families we’re taking care of our Airmen as well.

What do you find the most rewarding about your work?

My passion is helping and serving others and through this job I am able to do that daily, which is the most rewarding part about my work.

What has been your biggest challenge in the military, and how did you overcome that challenge?

The biggest challenge in the military so far is the overwhelming amount of work that I was tasked with from the get go. We had a shortage of nurses and providers, so that meant everyone had to put in a lot of extra work. On top of my everyday job, I was balancing on the job training, CDCs to become a 5-level, and was organizing numerous events. I was able to overcome the challenges with time management and proper prioritization.  I was able to do all this by putting the most important tasks first, staying positive, and having a great group of people I could ask any questions that came up along the way.

What has been your most memorable experience in the military?

Though I’ve only been in the military for a little over a year, my most memorable experience was attending the all-call for Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright. After listening to him share personal stories and answering questions from the crowd, I had the opportunity to meet him and snag a picture with him.

What is one piece of information or advice you would like to pass on?

Always be kinder than you feel and leave people better than you found them. With that being said, don’t forget to take care of yourself first because self-care is crucial.
