The 433rd Civil Engineer Squadron firefighters participated in the wing’s fourth 9/11 Memorial Stair climb during the unit training assembly at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Sept. 8.

The firefighters climbed stairs of the fire training building 55 times to equal the 110 floors of World Trade Center twin tower buildings.

Halfway through the memorial stair climb, the firefighters stopped for a moment of silence to remember the first responders that were lost during the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, in New York City. After the moment of silence, the firefighters spoke about the significance of the memorial stair climb and why they do it.

“Doing something like this, you truly never forget and so you honor the sacrifice those guys made the morning of the attacks,” said Staff Sgt. Jeff Shaw, 433rd CES firefighter. “I was in fourth grade and I remember thinking and my dad telling me that the world had changed forever.”
