12th Flying Training Wing

The 12th Flying Training Wing, headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, develops the next generation of Air Force aviators and enlisted aircrew by providing world-class flying training and education. The wing trains Airmen in the fundamentals of airmanship, instruction and leadership, preparing them for success in operational units across the Air Force. Through undergraduate Combat Systems Officer training, Pilot Instructor Training, Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals, Remotely Piloted Aircraft pilot indoctrination, enlisted aviator training, and other specialized programs, the 12th FTW produces skilled, adaptable, and combat-ready professionals capable of meeting the demands of today's complex operating environment while strengthening the future of American airpower.

First Airmen graduate BMT proof of concept at Keesler

KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- For the first time since 1968, a flight of nearly 60 Airmen graduated U.S. Air Force basic military training outside of Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. A flight of nearly 60 Airmen from the 37th Training Wing Detachment 5 marched across the Levitow Training Support Facility drill pad here May 15.

Due to safety concerns stemming from COVID-19, the Air Force sent new recruits to Keesler to demonstrate a proof of concept to generate the force at multiple locations during contingencies.

 “We are deliberately developing options to disperse the delivery of BMT during contingencies to provide surge capacity and introduce agility into the training pipeline construct,” said Maj. Gen. Andrea Tullos, Second Air Force commander, when explaining the purpose of these changes back in March.. “This will also help provide relief to the military training instructor staff and ease the strain on our BMT infrastructure.”

The continued training and production of Airmen while following safety precautions is something Tullos believes is necessary.

“These changes are part of our operational mindset to fight through COVID-19 and mitigate force health risks,” said Tullos. “We continue to carefully balance the need to deliver mission ready forces to our operational commanders with the force health protection measures we must responsibly take to preserve the welfare of our families and the extensive network of communities across our nation we call home.”

Lt. Gen. Brad Webb, commander of Air Education and Training Command, spoke about the significance of the graduation.

“We are experiencing a defining moment in history,” said Webb. “Thank you to the military training instructors, staff, and everyone that helped make this historic event possible in a moment’s notice. These trainees have proven they have what it takes to be an Airman by getting through this training.”

Chief Master Sgt. Julie Gudgel, command chief master sergeant of AETC, explained the versatility of Air Force training.

“We have created quality Airmen to represent our Air Force,” said Gudgel. “Keesler has made history. The Air Force has remained flexible through all of the challenges in our history, and what we have learned is that we can fight through this.”

All graduating Airmen from this proof of concept will continue their technical training at Keesler Air Force Base.

 

Public Affairs Information

Tours of the 12th Flying Training Wing are provided to various community organizations, high schools, businesses, and academic military recruitment programs to educate their members about the 12th FTW mission.

Due to the high volume of requests and limited public affairs resources, tours and static displays are limited.

Please submit all requests in writing to the 12th FTW Public Affairs by email to 12ftw.pa.1@us.af.mil at least three weeks but no more than six weeks in advance. You may also call 210-652-1272.

Tours are not available on weekends and may be cancelled at any time because of increased security measures or mission requirements. The 12th FTW does not host tours of Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph at-large. To schedule a tour of JBSA-Randolph, please contact JBSA-Randolph Public Affairs at 502abw.pa.official@us.af.mil or dial 210-652-4410.

If desired, requestors must arrange all meals. PA will provide contact information to base eateries. Modified tours will be granted for those with limited mobility - this must be stated on the tour request. If not stated, it is assumed that mobility is not an issue.
