JOINT-BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas-- Lt. Col. Amy Lewis assumed command of the 70th Flying Training Squadron, U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado, May 21 during a ceremony officiated by Col. Joel DeBoer, 306th Flying Training Group commander.
Outgoing 70th FTS commander Lt. Col. Scott Bowshot was selected to serve as a deputy group commander overseeing the cadet wing at USAFA; a significant total force integration role that has wide-reaching influence and impact.
As the commander, Lewis is responsible for the execution of the Air Education and Training Command/Air Force Reserve Command Associate Instructor Program at USAFA, supporting 306th FTG operations, conducting more than 55,000 sorties and 22,000 parachute jumps annually.
Prior to assuming command, Lewis was the squadron director of operations. Lt. Col. James Morgan, currently assigned to the 340th FTG headquarters staff, was named as the squadron's new director of operations.
Lewis was commissioned in 2001 upon graduation from the Air Force Academy, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Management. She also holds a Master of Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and completed Air Command and Staff College in 2016, and Air War College this year.
A command pilot with more than 2,200 flying hours in the F-16, T-37, T-38 and T-53, she amassed over 800 of those in the F-16 and supported Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Noble Eagle.
Lewis transitioned to the Air Force Reserve in 2014 after serving as a T-38C instructor pilot at Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training, Sheppard AFB, Texas, and a pilot instructor training instructor at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas. During her JBSA-Randolph assignment, she also deployed to the Pentagon in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as an analytic task force member.
Lewis has earned various medals and honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Aerial Achievement Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.
The 70th FTS is a geographically separated unit that falls under the 340th Flying Training Group at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas.
