12th Flying Training Wing

The 12th Flying Training Wing, headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, develops the next generation of Air Force aviators and enlisted aircrew by providing world-class flying training and education. The wing trains Airmen in the fundamentals of airmanship, instruction and leadership, preparing them for success in operational units across the Air Force. Through undergraduate Combat Systems Officer training, Pilot Instructor Training, Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals, Remotely Piloted Aircraft pilot indoctrination, enlisted aviator training, and other specialized programs, the 12th FTW produces skilled, adaptable, and combat-ready professionals capable of meeting the demands of today's complex operating environment while strengthening the future of American airpower.

97 CES firefighters recognized for life saving efforts

ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla.-- Six Airmen assigned to the 97th Civil Engineer Squadron (CES) Fire and Emergency Services Flight were presented life-saving awards signed by Jeffery Wagner, Air Force fire chief, at Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma, Jan. 13, 2022.

The recipients were: Staff Sgt. Charles Loicano, Staff Sgt. Ryan Maher, Airman 1st Class Austin Jolly, Airman 1st Class Joshua Turner, Airman First Class Matyas King and Mr. Marco Nava.

This is the 97th CES Fire Emergency Services Flight’s first time being presented with an Air Force level award.

The Airmen were recognized for reviving a 78-year-old victim with the use of an automated external defibrillator and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

The first responder on scene was Tech. Sgt. Bryan Haerer, 97th Security Forces Squadron flight sergeant, who performed solo CPR until the Fire and Emergency Services team arrived on site.

Once the firemen reached the scene, they performed CPR for approximately 25 minutes until an ambulance arrived.

“As soon as we got to the call, my training immediately kicked in,” said Staff Sgt. Charles Loicano, 97th CES lead firefighter. “There was no hesitation, no one skipped a beat; we went straight into what we were taught to do.”

Once stable, the victim was transported to Jackson County Memorial Hospital.

“Had we not been called out as fast as we were, I feel like it would’ve been a lot worse,” said Loicano. “Dialing 911 and knowing the importance and the impact that it can have on the response to the scene is a really big deal.”

Loicano said that it’s important to always remember your training.

“It was nice to go in and not necessarily have to think about what I was doing, it was kind of like an instinct,” said Airman 1st Class Austin Jolly, 97th CES firefighter. “This was my first major medical call and my training definitely came in handy.”

Col. David Vanderburg, 97th Mission Support Group commander, said that he was proud to be able to issue these awards. 

“This was a phenomenal achievement,'' said Vanderburg. “There’s nothing more important than saving a life.”

 

Public Affairs Information

Tours of the 12th Flying Training Wing are provided to various community organizations, high schools, businesses, and academic military recruitment programs to educate their members about the 12th FTW mission.

Due to the high volume of requests and limited public affairs resources, tours and static displays are limited.

Please submit all requests in writing to the 12th FTW Public Affairs by email to 12ftw.pa.1@us.af.mil at least three weeks but no more than six weeks in advance. You may also call 210-652-1272.

Tours are not available on weekends and may be cancelled at any time because of increased security measures or mission requirements. The 12th FTW does not host tours of Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph at-large. To schedule a tour of JBSA-Randolph, please contact JBSA-Randolph Public Affairs at 502abw.pa.official@us.af.mil or dial 210-652-4410.

If desired, requestors must arrange all meals. PA will provide contact information to base eateries. Modified tours will be granted for those with limited mobility - this must be stated on the tour request. If not stated, it is assumed that mobility is not an issue.
