MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Lt. Gen. Andrea Tullos returned to Maxwell to assume command of Air University during an assumption of command ceremony, July 25, 2022.
A career security forces officer, Tullos received her commission in 1992 through Officer Training School at Maxwell. She served as the commander of Maxwell’s 42nd Air Base Wing from May 2014 to June 2016.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to return to Maxwell, Montgomery and the River Region since I had the opportunity to command here once already,” said Tullos. “This community has made Maxwell Air Force Base a 'sweet home' for thousands of Airman and now Guardians who come here for the training, education and development that makes us the world's greatest Air and Space Force. I look forward to serve, and it's an honor to be back."
In the years since her departure from the central Alabama base, Tullos served as the director of Security Forces and the deputy chief of staff for Logistics, Engineering and Force Protection, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, from July 2016 to August 2019. She then served as the commander of Second Air Force at Keesler AFB, Miss., from August 2019 to August 2021.
From August 2021 until assuming command of Air University, she was the deputy commander of Air Education and Training Command, headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas. The university’s previous commander, Gen. James Hecker, departed at the end of June 2022 to take command of U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa.
The commander of Air Education and Training Command, Lt. Gen. Brian Robinson, officiated Tullos’s assumption of command ceremony.
“To the men and women of Air University, you should know you are getting a phenomenal commander,” said Robinson. “She has a history of excellence in developing Airmen. She is a servant leader, but above all, she is a humble, credible and approachable leader.”
As the commander and president of Air University, Tullos is now responsible for the professional military education and professional continuing education of more than 50,000 resident and 120,000 non-resident officer, enlisted and civilian personnel annually. Additionally, she’s responsible for officer commissioning through Officer Training School and Air Force ROTC.
