ALTUS AIR FORCE BASE, Okla.-- Dr. Joe Leverett, a local civic leader and member of the Air and Space Force Civic Leader Program, received the Distinguished Public Service award at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland on March 9, 2023.
The Distinguished Public Service medal, presented on behalf of the Secretary of the Air Force, is the highest award given to non-employee civilians.
“I am greatly honored and humbled to be presented the Distinguished Public Service Award,” said Leverett. “While I was given the award, it is a reflection of the entire Altus community. It is great to see that the Air Force recognizes our efforts to support our base, our Airmen and our mission.”
Leverett, a local doctor and chairman of the Altus Military Affairs Committee, was appointed by the Secretary of the Air Force for the Air and Space Force Civic Leader program in 2011 to act as an advocate and advisor on how to best accomplish the Air Force’s mission within his local area.
Leverett has served as a facilitator between Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma and the surrounding community. His role as chairman of the Altus MAC includes supporting Airmen and families as well as advocating for military infrastructure initiatives.
During Leverett’s time with the MAC, the group set a national standard for community support and was recognized by Air Force headquarters for their innovative partnerships and projects.
Lt. Gen. Brian Robinson, commander of Air Education and Training Command, expressed his gratitude for Leverett’s hard work.
"Dr. Leverett embodies what it truly means to be a selfless advocate for our Airmen at every level. His unparalleled efforts have positively impacted and will continue to impact the lives of Airmen across AETC and our Air Force," said Robinson. "I am extremely grateful for his service to our team and can't think of a more deserving recipient of this award."
