12th Flying Training Wing

The 12th Flying Training Wing, headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, develops the next generation of Air Force aviators and enlisted aircrew by providing world-class flying training and education. The wing trains Airmen in the fundamentals of airmanship, instruction and leadership, preparing them for success in operational units across the Air Force. Through undergraduate Combat Systems Officer training, Pilot Instructor Training, Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals, Remotely Piloted Aircraft pilot indoctrination, enlisted aviator training, and other specialized programs, the 12th FTW produces skilled, adaptable, and combat-ready professionals capable of meeting the demands of today's complex operating environment while strengthening the future of American airpower.

Air University | Cadet Training Officers take over Air Force ROTC Instagram during Special Warfare Orientation Course

Cadets will take over the Air Force ROTC Instagram account July 12, 2023, to highlight the Special Warfare Orientation Course.

SWOC is a two-week professional development opportunity for AFROTC and U.S. Air Force Academy cadets conducted at USAFA in Colorado Springs. This course is offered twice in the summers with the intent to prepare and recruit cadets interested in Air Force Special Warfare in becoming better and more confident candidates for the screening and selection process.

The Special Warfare Orientation Course is a two-week professional development opportunity for AFROTC and U.S. Air Force Academy cadets. This course is offered twice in the summers with the intent to better prepare and recruit cadets interested in Air Force Special Warfare for the screening and selection process. As the only officer Air Force specialty codes that require a pre-commissioning screener, providing more exposure to the mental, physical and educational aspects of special warfare can play a pivotal role in a cadet’s performance during the screener. As the only officer Air Force specialty codes that require a pre-commissioning screener, providing more exposure to the mental, physical and educational aspects of special warfare can play a pivotal role in a cadet’s performance during the screener. The current selection rate is only 20-23 percent, and the career fields include Special Tactics, Tactical Air Control Party and Combat Rescue.

Cadets Zachary Hewett and Joshua Kolesar will host the takeover as both participated in SWOC last year and came back this summer to serve as Cadet Training Officers. Hewett is from AFROTC Detachment 030 at the University of Arkansas. He is a senior mathematics major and hopes to become a Combat Rescue Officer.

Kolesar is a senior from AFROTC Det 730 at the University of Pittsburgh. He is majoring in Mechanical Engineering and hopes to become a Special Tactics Officers in the Air Force.   

"This course pushes people in many ways and indues stress that most have little to no experience in, so being a peer mentor and sharing my reactions and emotions has been beneficial to me and hopefully the cadets participating,” said Kolesar. “We look forward to questions and hope to inspire folks to consider the attending the course in the future as all participates will learn more about themselves, working in a team to accomplish difficult missions.

Public Affairs Information

Tours of the 12th Flying Training Wing are provided to various community organizations, high schools, businesses, and academic military recruitment programs to educate their members about the 12th FTW mission.

Due to the high volume of requests and limited public affairs resources, tours and static displays are limited.

Please submit all requests in writing to the 12th FTW Public Affairs by email to 12ftw.pa.1@us.af.mil at least three weeks but no more than six weeks in advance. You may also call 210-652-1272.

Tours are not available on weekends and may be cancelled at any time because of increased security measures or mission requirements. The 12th FTW does not host tours of Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph at-large. To schedule a tour of JBSA-Randolph, please contact JBSA-Randolph Public Affairs at 502abw.pa.official@us.af.mil or dial 210-652-4410.

If desired, requestors must arrange all meals. PA will provide contact information to base eateries. Modified tours will be granted for those with limited mobility - this must be stated on the tour request. If not stated, it is assumed that mobility is not an issue.
