JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas -- Staff Sgt. Jonathan S. Ventura a communications and navigation Instructor with the 318th Training Squadron, was recently selected to serve as the Command Chief for a Day at the 37th Training Wing.
Hailing from the vibrant city of Bayamon in Puerto Rico, Ventura’s journey to this pivotal role showcases dedication, leadership, and the embodiment of the Air Force’s core values.
In just five years, Ventura’s career has been nothing short of commendable. Overcoming the challenges of learning and dominating the English language Ventura says he has worked hard to get to where he is at today.
“Joining the Air Force was a big challenge, while everyone else was learning military stuff, I was learning the language plus my job and learning the military culture also,” Ventura said.
Ventura holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from La Universidad Central de Bayamon, Puerto Rico. He worked at a private college as a Student Services Coordinator and says after several years in that role he was ready for a new challenge.
“That is when I considered the U.S. Air Force as an option,” Ventura said. “I officially joined the Air Force in 2018 with high expectations and committed to starting my new avionics/maintainer career.”
As a seasoned communications and navigation instructor, he has consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence. His journey from Puerto Rico to the ranks of the U.S. Air Force is a testament to his resilience and the diverse backgrounds that enrich the armed forces.
Ventura provides communication, navigation, and instrument technical instruction to international military students from 23 Latin American Partner Nations that support joint and wing strategic objectives to develop partnerships in the Western Hemisphere.
The sergeant shared the opportunity to become an instructor for International Military Students in the Inter-American Air Force’s Academy was a contributing factor for his decision to continue serving in the Air Force.
“I want to work hard to be the best version of myself, improving my abilities and putting into practice all the acquired knowledge,” he said.
His selection as Command Chief for a Day is a recognition of his outstanding contributions and an opportunity to witness leadership from a different perspective. As Command Chief for a Day, Ventura worked alongside the wing’s command chief, Chief Master Sgt. Carlos Damian, on Dec.21.
“Chief Damian is also COM/NAV, so we share the same job,” Ventura said. “This opportunity allowed me to see how the wing actually works.”
Ventura’s Puerto Rican roots infuse a distinct flavor into the 37 TRW, adding cultural diversity to the military environment. The opportunity for a Staff Sergeant to take the reins as Command Chief reflects the Air Force’s commitment to recognizing talent at all levels and foster a culture of inclusivity.
Ventura says he envisions himself as a senior non-commissioned officer utilizing all the knowledge and opportunities given to him to be the leader of the next generation of Airmen and Guardians.
“Joining the Air Force has been a big step in my life and probably the one I’m most proud of,” Ventura said.
