LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz — In a heartfelt tribute to a dedicated veteran service member and community stalwart, Brig. Gen. Jason Rueschhoff, in one of his final acts as wing commander, declared August 6 as “Vic Peterson Appreciation Day.” The announcement came on June 14 during a ceremony in front of a hangar packed with military and civilian leaders, where a pleasantly surprised Victor F. Peterson, Jr. was presented with the Volunteer Excellence Award.
Vic Peterson, a name synonymous with service and dedication, was born on August 6, 1949, in Grand Junction, Colorado. The date, now permanently etched in the history of Luke Air Force Base, marks both Peterson’s 75th birthday and his extraordinary contributions over a career spanning more than 22 years in the Air Force.
Peterson’s remarkable journey spans decades of dedicated service. His military career, marked by valor and commitment, includes significant contributions during the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Shield/Storm. After his military service, Peterson continued his legacy of service as a Mine Safety and Health inspector and National Mine Rescue team member with the U.S. Department of Labor.
Chief Master Sgt. Aaron Duggins, 56th Civil Engineer Squadron fire chief, praised Peterson’s extensive involvement in base and community activities, “Vic Peterson is a Luke Air Force Base staple.” Duggins said, “He’s heavily involved in both base and community events and is a highly decorated Vietnam vet. Vic concluded his Air Force career as a firefighter; it’s our pleasure to help honor him.”
Peterson is a leading advocate for veterans and retirees. As vice-president of the Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans and a legislative representative for the National Active and Retired Federal Employees in Arizona, he plays a crucial role in shaping legislation that benefits seniors, federal civil service retirees, and veterans. His work extends to the Arizona State Legislature Veterans Caucus and the Legislative Committee of Senator Kyrsten Sinema’s Veterans Advisory Council.
Peterson’s dedication to veteran transition programs is also noteworthy. He actively supports organizations like Team Red White and Blue, and Valors on 8th, which assist veterans in transitioning back to civilian life. His dedication and service were recognized in 2019, when he was inducted as a member of the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society.
As Peterson marks his 75th year, his legacy of service continues to inspire and impact those around him. Col. Peter Abercrombie, 56th Mission Support Group commander at Luke AFB, highlighted Peterson’s contribution. “Our installation has numerous unsung heroes who are dedicated to the success of Luke AFB,” said Abercrombie. “It’s perfect that we can acknowledge one of our best!”
To celebrate Vic Peterson Appreciation Day, several special events were held on August 26th, to honor the occasion, including a special lunch menu item in his honor at Club 56.
Festivities kicked off at the Hensman Dining Facility where attendees had the opportunity to enjoy breakfast with Peterson, hear about his experiences, and learn about his insights on the evolution of the United States Air Force and his current involvement in veterans’ organizations and legislative matters. A Q&A session followed, offering Airmen and other attendees a chance to engage directly with Peterson, and honor a man who has given so much to his country.
