12th Flying Training Wing

The 12th Flying Training Wing, headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, develops the next generation of Air Force aviators and enlisted aircrew by providing world-class flying training and education. The wing trains Airmen in the fundamentals of airmanship, instruction and leadership, preparing them for success in operational units across the Air Force. Through undergraduate Combat Systems Officer training, Pilot Instructor Training, Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals, Remotely Piloted Aircraft pilot indoctrination, enlisted aviator training, and other specialized programs, the 12th FTW produces skilled, adaptable, and combat-ready professionals capable of meeting the demands of today's complex operating environment while strengthening the future of American airpower.

New commanders attend UPT University

Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph --  

The 19th Air Force hosted a three-day, in-person training session, Undergraduate Pilot Training University, bringing together leaders from across the command to discuss all aspects of undergraduate pilot training.

The event, held Sept. 27-29, included wing commanders, deputy commanders, command chiefs, and squadron commanders. The session kicked off with a welcome address from Maj. Gen. Gregory Kreuder, 19th Air Force commander.

Key topics covered during the training included pilot training status, the future of UPT, timeline management, safety protocols, resource methodologies, syllabus coordination process, Comprehensive Readiness for Aircrew Flying Training (CRAFT), maintenance metrics, and an update on the T-7A Red Hawk trainer aircraft.

Col. Peter Lee, 12th Flying Training Wing commander, gave his thoughts on attending UPT University for the first time.  “This was a good opportunity to meet my peers and hear their perspectives and challenges,” said Lee, “At the 12th FTW we work to provide our customers a quality product, so we are hyper-focused on making sure our instructors pilots meet and exceed UPT expectations.”

The third day featured a tour of Detachment 24, where participants were introduced to emerging technologies, including the Enhanced Immersive Training Device (e-ITD) and Project Lumenix, which are being implemented in the Fighter Bomber Fundamentals (FBF) program. These advancements aim to revolutionize how pilots are trained by improving simulation and training realism.

Before the event concluded, attendees gathered for a group photo, followed by closing remarks delivered by Brig. Gen. Derek Salmi, 19th Air Force deputy commander.  

“Overall it was a great opportunity to get the wing commanders together and meet the 19th AF staff and have some great cross-talk,” said Col. Tyler Ellison 47th Flying Training Wing commander, “I think every base is unique but there are many common challenges we all share, learning how to be more efficient in syllabus execution was definitely a valuable takeaway this week.

The next UPT University will be held in March of 2025.

Public Affairs Information

Tours of the 12th Flying Training Wing are provided to various community organizations, high schools, businesses, and academic military recruitment programs to educate their members about the 12th FTW mission.

Due to the high volume of requests and limited public affairs resources, tours and static displays are limited.

Please submit all requests in writing to the 12th FTW Public Affairs by email to 12ftw.pa.1@us.af.mil at least three weeks but no more than six weeks in advance. You may also call 210-652-1272.

Tours are not available on weekends and may be cancelled at any time because of increased security measures or mission requirements. The 12th FTW does not host tours of Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph at-large. To schedule a tour of JBSA-Randolph, please contact JBSA-Randolph Public Affairs at 502abw.pa.official@us.af.mil or dial 210-652-4410.

If desired, requestors must arrange all meals. PA will provide contact information to base eateries. Modified tours will be granted for those with limited mobility - this must be stated on the tour request. If not stated, it is assumed that mobility is not an issue.
